Jigme Lingpa (1729–1798) was one of the most influential masters of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He is best known as the revealer of the Longchen Nyingthig, one of the most widely practiced Dzogchen cycles today.
Born in central Tibet, Jigme Lingpa was largely self-trained and spent many years in retreat. Through a series of profound visionary experiences, he received the Longchen Nyingthig teachings, which he regarded as mind-terma revealed from Longchenpa, whom he considered to be his previous incarnation.
A brilliant scholar, poet, and meditator, he composed numerous works on Dzogchen, Madhyamaka philosophy, ethics, and tantra, skillfully uniting profound view with practical instruction. His teachings strongly emphasized devotion, compassion, and the direct recognition of the nature of mind.
Jigme Lingpa’s legacy continues through the Longchen Nyingthig lineage, transmitted by many great masters and remaining a central path of practice in Tibetan Buddhism today.
