Mewa Khenchen Tsewang Rigzin is a senior scholar-practitioner (khenchen) of the Nyingma tradition, known for his mastery of sutra, tantra, and Dzogchen, particularly within the scholastic style influenced by Jamgon Mipham.
He received extensive training in monastic universities and completed the full khenpo curriculum, including Madhyamaka, Prajñāpāramitā, Abhidharma, Vinaya, and tantric exegesis. Later, he served as a principal teacher and examiner, earning the honorific title Khenchen (“Great Khenpo”).
He is especially respected for his clear philosophical exposition—particularly of Madhyamaka and Nyingma tenet systems—and for his ability to integrate deep scholarship with authentic practice. He emphasized grounding the Dzogchen view in rigorous study and correct understanding (lta ba) as the foundation of practice.
Khenchen Tsewang Rigzin is remembered less as a public figure and more as a “teacher’s teacher,” contributing significantly to the preservation and transmission of the Nyingma scholastic and contemplative traditions through his students.
